November 14th is World Diabetes Day. This year marks the 10th year I’ve been living with this disease – I think it is more important than ever to discuss the impacts of diabetes in the classroom and the office. Diabetes treatment can involve medications (pills, insulin) and/or increasing exercise and movement. Those with Type 1 Diabetes, movement is a crucial part of treatment. With two-thirds of Canadians suffering with either diabetes or is pre-diabetic, movement should be an important part of all our lives.

We are a mother-daughter team on a 500 mile walking quest to learn more about ourselves and others through gratefulness. This past summer, we headed to Spain to walk the El Camino de Santiago pilgrimage with a plan to interview someone each day to find out what they were grateful for and to practice daily gratitude ourselves. The El Camino pilgrimage is traditionally a religious pilgrimage with pilgrims walking from all across Europe to visit the sacred burial site of St. James.

Integrating movement in learning will become the top priority in education.  If we combine what we know about learning with what we know about fitness, there is a natural alignment. The optimal amount of information each individual can have modeled, learn, practice, and eventually master, will increase if the student is maintaining a healthy functioning brain. Teachers need to know the techniques, materials, equipment, and furniture that can help facilitate the integration of movement into the learning process.
